A dividend is classified as the distribution of a portion of the company’s earnings to a class of its shareholders. These can come in the form of share of stocks, cash payments or some other financial instrument.

Unclaimed dividends are those which have been paid by the company but have not been claimed by the shareholder, even beyond their validity period.

This can be caused by several factors which may include

  • Oversight,
  • Change of address, or
  • Death

These unclaimed dividends are listed under current liability in the balance sheet of the company, as they can be claimed any time by the shareholder.

We, at Asset Tracers India, have come across many such cases where the shareholder had completely forgotten about their shares/misplaced their papers and hence didn’t think of collecting the dividend. We were not only able to track these shares, but also helped them recover their unclaimed dividends.
